Duties

The LPN in Dermatology is an integral member of the patient care team. They are responsible for facilitating patient care for all clinics, supplying exam rooms and ordering clinic supplies. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist with outpatient surgical procedures - biopsies, excisions, dressing changes, wound care and other various dermatologic care
  • Assure surgical equipment/trays are readily available for immediate use
  • Document observations and changes in patient's condition; document patient interactions using the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS)
  • Collaborate with health team members to facilitate education and positive patient care outcomes
  • Provide nursing care to patients with a variety of dermatologic health concerns
  • Work effectively with staff, patients and families, and displays excellent communication skills
  • Ability to recognize, respond and initiate an appropriate level of response to medical emergencies such as cardiac and/or respiratory failure
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide care and services consistent with Infection Control Standards of Practice, providing optimal outcomes for patients, residents, visitors and employees

Work Schedule:Administrative day tour, with possible overtime, weekend, and holiday coverage.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • 3 years of experience working as a practical nurse in a medical center.
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience working in dermatology clinic.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: This position involves considerable amount of standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 6 hours), stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. It requires repositioning patients, assisting with transfers from wheelchairs/stretchers and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices are available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift clients. The work may involve pushing or lifting in excess of 45 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual (corrected to 20/30 or better with color discrimination) and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed or extended position. The nurse may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The nurse many be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent must possess sound and logical clinical judgment. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The position also requires ability to work on computers for extended periods of time.
